About this calorie calculator
Calorie Calculator was created to make commonly used calorie estimation formulas easier to understand. We show our formulas, assumptions and limitations so users can see how each result is produced.
Methodology
Basal Metabolic Rate is estimated with the Mifflin–St Jeor equation and multiplied by an activity factor between 1.2 and 1.9 to estimate Total Daily Energy Expenditure. Calorie targets are percentage-based: a moderate deficit for weight loss, TDEE for maintenance, a larger surplus for weight gain and a smaller controlled surplus for building muscle.
Protein is estimated from body weight and adjusted by goal, fat is estimated at approximately 30% of the calorie target and carbohydrates take the remaining calories. Every number is an estimate, not a prescription. The full breakdown, including the formulas and source list, is published in the methodology section of the calorie calculator.
